Leading prison reform activist Dorothy Gaines, introduced by King County Council Member Larry Gossett, speaks in Seattle at the invitation of The Village of Hope. Dorothy, caught in the War on Drugs, was wrongfully imprisoned in 1994. Sentenced to 20 years, Dorothy spent 6 years in federal prison, until her pardon by President Bill Clinton. Dorothy links the assault of the prison sysytem upon working class and minority communities with inequality throughout society and asks “When are we going to close prisons and put that money into schools?”

Washington State Senator Adam Kline has served in the the legislature since 1997. He is Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committees which deals with criminal justice and courts operations. Among WA lawmakers, Kline is one of the most outspoken advocates for criminal justice reform. Kline questions the Three Strikes Law, the need for prisoners’ close family ties for betterment, and his activities during the 2009 legislative session.

Each year, the Washington State Reformatory chapter of the Black Prisoners Caucus (BPC) hosts a summit to discuss, social justice, crime, education and community. BPC members, including students of University Beyond Bars, describe their experiences and explain what qualifies them to be part of a community building enterprise. Invited guest, Senator Adam Kline also makes a brief statement about the importance of strong relations between lawmakers and the public and his efforts to amend the Washington State Three Strikes Law.
