Arthur, known among friends as Art, is an award winning writer, a longtime student of University Beyond Bars (UBB) and a mentor to younger men in the program. Art won the PEN American Center 2010 Prison Writing Award in the Memoir category for Walla Walla IMU. An excerpt from the essay, titled Problem Child, appeared in the Summer 2011 issue of YES!
